Chosen samples for my bag

After sampling with with many different materials and colours the material I chose for my bag is calico I chose to use calico as it is a strong material that for a bag would be very practical, I chose to dye the calico using Red- MXG procian dye and for the leafs I decided to use a light brown - RR mixes with a little bit of black -SN-G pigment dye and for the veins I chose to print them with black -SN-G pigment dye. For the animal print I chose to also print it with black -SN-G pigment dye.

Sampling

After experimenting with many different materials with my leaf screen I experimented with my screen which had my animal design on it. I experimented with different materials such as white muslin, cream muslin, heavy viscose silk, habotai silk light, cotton, calico and Devore fabric. My Devore sample didn't work well at all the image didn't print through as well as I had hoped. For the other materials I used I use some as the raw material and dyed some using the red -MXG procian dye, for all the prints I used black- SN-G pigment dye. I felt some samples worked better then others. The samples that worked the best was the white muslin (which was dyed), heavy viscose silk, cotton and calico, these worked the best as the materials seemed to compliment the print the texture f the material and the depth of the fibers all worked incredibly well with my print making it sharp and clear. The samples of habotai silk light and cream muslin didn't work well with my print. The habotai silk light was extremely think and floaty, and when dyed the colour faded extreme amounts. The fabrics would work so much better as a lining instead of a main feature. I personally didn't like the cream muslin as the texture of it was incredibly rough and my print didn't look as sharp as it did on the other materials.

Primary research

To collect some primary research I visited the fleets in Barnsley and Dearne valley park it was a cold autumn morning and I feel I captured some amazing pictures which showed autumn beautifully, I captured a fantastic shot of some fungi which is a great inspiration for me, the pictures I have captured was a great inspiration for my work.

Norwich

On my way back from Norwich the sun started to set and the sky was looking beautiful so I decided to take some photos, as the sub was drying it started to make the passing trees look beautiful as like silhouettes and I felt it was a beautiful autumn sun set.

Sampling

Here shows some samples of my repeat print using materials such as white Muslin, cream muslin, habotai silk light and heavy viscose silk. I used a light brown - RRT and red- BB pigment dye for the leaf shapes and black- SN-G pigment dye for the veins, some material was dyed using red- MXG Procian dye. To make sure I could place the veins on the leafs correctly I taped the fabric to the table and place then evenly apart so I could use the stops on the table to make sure the were correctly placed. I was really happy with these samples as they showed how well my screens worked together an how different fabrics would effect My print it was really great experimenting with extremely different fabrics.

Sheffield.

I went to Sheffield to visit the art space open studio exhibition, whilst there I spotted little things which were nature. In the millennium gallery there was a beautiful mineral crystal, it was such an amazing purple colour, I hadn't enforce thought about crystals being nature but it would have been hard to put then to an exact season, in the winter garden there was models of mushrooms which I liked as they were the red an white spotted mushrooms which are hard to come across there was also huge leafs which I loved how you could see all the detail in them, whilst walk around the art space exhibition I saw a chair which had nature print, I think it was a William Morris print as it was certainly in the style of him. I love the chair as it showed how nature can be put into print using different screens and colours.

Making sure my screen repeats properly

To make sure my screen repeated properly and to set the T bars up on the blocks on the printing table we practice on black paper and printed with talc so it doesn't block the screen up and is easy to wipe away.
