Experimenting with felt.

As for my FMP I want to work with felt I have been experimenting with adding different texture and creating different densities. All samples were done using the rolling technique.

First I looked at the density; I wanted to see how thin I could get the felt and how thick before the fibres no longer combined together. I did this as I wanted to see what different effects I could create when making my tea cups or tea pots.

To add texture I looked at adding different materials and adding extra pieces for felt to make them stand out in a pattern such as dots or stripes. I wanted to experiment with adding different textures so I could see how intricate I could make a pattern when adding detail to my creations.

I also experimented with dying wool to see if I could create different colours without adding different coloured fibres, I found this difficult as the dye was really difficult to work into the Fibres once felted.

Through experimenting I have found that using a thicker density of fibres would be better to construct and shape out of as it is stronger although the finer fibres create a nicer more interesting effect. Adding detail can be difficult when adding extra wool as when rolling it can distort the patter but adding materials and string can create pattern more accurately. If in constructing my tea cups and tea pots I’m wanting to use colours I will add coloured fibres as it is less complicated and can be added with more ease.
